Our Story

A Movement Built on Evidence, Community and Justice

AllWoman4Betteh UK is a women-led social enterprise advancing women's empowerment, climate resilience and energy justice — rooted in research, driven by community.

Our Vision

A society where women are economically independent, energy secure and empowered to lead the transition to a fairer, greener future.

Our Mission

To advance women's empowerment, climate resilience and energy justice through evidence-led community action, advocacy and partnership — ensuring women have the knowledge, skills, connections and voice to thrive.

The Origin

How It Began

In 2014, Leah Fatmatta Suma led a landmark national study on Women's Access to Finance in Sierra Leone. What she found was not a lack of ambition — it was a lack of access. Women across all 14 districts were working hard, building families, sustaining communities, and yet systematically excluded from the financial systems that could transform their lives.

That study became the foundation of AllWoman4Betteh — All Woman for Betteh. 'Betteh' is Krio for 'better'. The name is both a promise and a call to action: every woman deserves better, and together, we can build it.

Now based in the UK, AllWoman4Betteh has grown into a women-led social enterprise working at the intersection of gender, energy and climate justice — bringing the same evidence-led, community-driven approach to the challenges facing women in the UK today.

The Founder's Vision

Leah Fatmatta Suma

Founder & Executive Director, AllWoman4Betteh UK

Leah Fatmatta Suma is a development practitioner, researcher and advocate whose career has been defined by a commitment to women's economic empowerment — first in Sierra Leone and West Africa, and now across the UK.

Her 2014 national study on Women's Access to Finance in Sierra Leone revealed the structural barriers that keep women from accessing capital, markets and opportunity. Rather than simply publishing the findings, Leah built a movement around them — and brought that movement to the UK, where women face their own deep inequalities in energy access, economic security and climate resilience.

She founded AllWoman4Betteh UK to turn research into action: to create the evidence, the networks and the programmes that make women's energy justice not just possible, but inevitable.

"Energy justice is women's justice. When women can afford to heat their homes, power their businesses and participate in the green transition, we all move forward together."

Leah's vision is a UK — and a world — where every woman has a warm, safe and affordable home; where the green transition is fair; and where women have a meaningful voice in the decisions that shape their lives and communities.
